Biosafety Cabinets — ESCO Class II Type A2 Biological Safety Cabinets

Personnel, product and environmental protection for microbiology, cell culture and pharma QC labs. Saksham supplies, installs and certifies ESCO biosafety cabinets across India.

Our biosafety cabinets

What a Class II biosafety cabinet does

A Class II biological safety cabinet (BSC) combines inflow air at the front opening, HEPA-filtered downflow over the work surface and HEPA-filtered exhaust. Together these protect the operator, the product and the environment. In a Type A2 cabinet about 70% of the air is recirculated and 30% exhausted, so it can be installed without hard ducting (or with a thimble/canopy connection for minute amounts of volatile chemicals).

Class II A2 vs B2 vs laminar flow — choosing correctly

CabinetProtectsTypical use
Class II Type A2 BSCOperator + product + environmentMicrobiology, sterility testing support, cell culture, BSL-1/2 agents, pharma QC
Class II Type B2 BSCOperator + product + environment; 100% hard-ducted exhaustWork combining biologicals with volatile toxic chemicals or radionuclides
Laminar flow cabinet (clean bench)Product only — not the operatorNon-hazardous aseptic work, media plate prep, electronics. See laminar air flow cabinets

If the sample could be infectious, use a biosafety cabinet, not a laminar flow bench. Our laminar flow vs biosafety cabinet guide explains the difference in detail.

ESCO Airstream® biosafety cabinets

ESCO is one of the world's largest biosafety cabinet manufacturers. The Airstream® NS G4 Class II Type A2 cabinet is certified to NSF/ANSI 49 and EN 12469, with 99.999% @ 0.3 µm HEPA filtration, inflow velocity ≥ 0.38 m/s and an ergonomic angled front. Widths and options (UV lamp, gas/vacuum taps, stands) are configured to your room and workflow.

Installation, certification and AMC

  • Site survey, delivery, installation and IQ/OQ/PQ documentation for GMP labs.
  • Annual performance testing: inflow and downflow velocity, HEPA filter integrity (DOP/PAO), smoke pattern, and light, noise and UV checks.
  • HEPA filter replacement, decontamination support and genuine ESCO spares.
  • Annual maintenance contracts with a 48-hour breakdown response.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a biosafety cabinet and a laminar flow cabinet?

A biosafety cabinet protects the operator, the product and the environment using inflow air and HEPA-filtered exhaust. A laminar flow cabinet only protects the product, and blows filtered air towards the operator. Infectious or hazardous biological material must be handled in a BSC.

Which biosafety cabinet is used in pharma QC microbiology labs?

Most pharma QC microbiology labs in India use Class II Type A2 biosafety cabinets certified to NSF/ANSI 49 or EN 12469, such as the ESCO Airstream NS G4.

What is the price of a biosafety cabinet in India?

Price depends on cabinet width (typically 3, 4, 5 or 6 ft), class and type, certification, accessories and installation scope. Contact us with your room size and application for a configured quote.

How often should a biosafety cabinet be certified?

NSF/ANSI 49 and EN 12469 recommend performance testing at installation, after relocation or filter change, and at least once a year. Saksham offers annual certification and AMC.

Do biosafety cabinets need ducting?

A Class II Type A2 cabinet recirculates about 70% of its air and can be installed without ducting, or with a canopy connection. A Type B2 cabinet must be hard-ducted to a dedicated exhaust.
